What Project Backdash keeps, what is public, and how to remove it.

Updated

Your account

  • Playing online gives you a random player ID. No sign-in is needed: you start as a guest.
  • Log in with Discord to keep one account across PCs; Ranked needs it. We keep only your Discord ID and display name. Discord does not give us your email or friends, and we do not keep its access token.
  • Your player name is public. If you have not set one, your Discord display name becomes it.

What is public

Anyone can see these, on this site, in the launcher and through the public data at lobby.backdash.gg:

  • Lobbies: each open room's host name, region and last character.
  • Ranked: the leaderboard, and each Ranked player's profile: name, character, region, rank, MMR, wins and losses, and their rated sets and games with their opponents' names.
  • Stats: totals, and the top players by MMR with their name, character and rank.
  • Shared replays: when you press Upload, anyone can find, watch and download that replay, with both players' names, characters and inputs.

Matches that are not Ranked stay private to the two players. To stay off the public lists, do not play Ranked or upload replays, or use Remove my data.

It runs on Cloudflare, with the database at DigitalOcean and encrypted backups at Backblaze. Backups are erased within 30 days.

Problem reports

A report is sent only when you press Feedback, Report a problem or Send report, or when you turn on Send problem reports automatically (after a freeze or a bad end) or Send diagnostics (a short summary after each session). Both settings are off until you choose.

  • A report holds your note, your player name, a random install ID, logs from setup and your last three sessions, some settings, and your PC's processor, memory, Windows version, graphics card and controller model.
  • A summary holds connection and rollback numbers, the version, your PC's processor, memory, Windows version and graphics card, and the install ID.
  • Before sending, the launcher removes your Windows user name, file paths, IP addresses, email addresses and keys.

They go to diag-staging.backdash.gg on Cloudflare, only we can read them, and they are deleted after 90 days. A notice of each report, with your name and the first line of your note, goes to our private Discord channel.

Connections

  • A match runs directly between the two PCs when it can, so your opponent sees your public IP address and your local network address. The online service passes them only to your opponent and does not keep them.
  • When a direct connection fails, the match goes through Cloudflare's relay, and your opponent sees Cloudflare's address instead.
  • Game traffic is not encrypted.
  • To find a route, the launcher asks Google and Cloudflare for your public address, opens a game port on your router with UPnP while you play, and measures the delay to Amazon Web Services to pick your region. Nothing else is sent to them.
  • The online service keeps no request logs. For abuse limits and room bans it keeps only hashes of your IP address, deleted within a day or when the room closes.

Other services

  • Updates: at start, the launcher reads the signed release file at dl.backdash.gg. Nothing about you is sent. An update downloads only when you choose it.
  • System software: setup downloads PS3UPDAT.PUP from its publisher's update server.
  • Discord: while Discord runs, it shows what you are playing (mode, room, characters, score and rank) on your Discord profile. Turn off Show what I'm playing on Discord in Settings.

On your PC

Your game files are copied into %APPDATA%\Project Backdash and never uploaded. Your settings, account keys, replays (the newest 200 games or 512 MB; favourites stay) and logs live there too, and clips go to your Videos folder. Uninstalling keeps this folder.

Remove my data

In the launcher: Settings → Game → Remove my data.

  • Online, it erases your match records (also from your opponents' histories), ratings, Discord link, friends, blocks, messages (both sides of each conversation), shared replays and problem reports.
  • On your PC, it then clears your game files, settings, replays and account keys.
  • What stays: your player ID with a hash of its key, and a record that it was removed, so a backup cannot bring your data back; reports filed by or about you, until their 365 days end; and past Ranked results, with your name shown as "Removed player".

Copies that others downloaded cannot be recalled.
